We had a wonderful first Valentine's Day with Max. My mom got him a couple Valentine books (I know, we were shocked too) and his day care had a Valentine's Day party (Jeff and I ate the candy for him). On the actual day we enjoyed just hanging out as a family. Jeff got a "magic shaker" toy as a Valentine's gift for Max....he really likes it but his favorite part so far is, you guessed it, the box. I got a heart-print tablecloth at Target to use as a backdrop for some pictures, so we played around with that a bit. Max now has three teeth coming in, and we think there's a fourth one trying to break through the surface. He continues to love table foods...last night I made some spaghetti sauce with beef and beans and mixed it with orzo pasta for him, and he ate an amount that stunned both Jeff and me! He is getting very good at picking up finger foods and getting them in his mouth. Sometimes Jeff will put something in his hand and make a fist, and Max likes to pry his fingers open to find the desired food. We have tried letting him use the spoon himself (with some guidance) but so far he just wants to drop it over the side of the high chair. If we try to guide it to his mouth, he promptly lets go of the spoon. Oh well, we will get there eventually, I'm sure.

I'm working on planning Max's first birthday party, which is just over a month away now! We'll be doing a farm theme and it's been fun to find things that work with that for the party favors and decorations. It will be interesting to see his reaction to cake! We're doing one year photos and "cake smash" pictures with my friend Justine (of J. Shelton Photography) a week ahead of time, so that we can have some pictures at the party. It will also be a good way for Max to have a chance to figure out the whole cake thing before the party.

Max loves to wave these days. He waves at everything...cars driving by, people in the store, even the washer and dryer! He loves to watch them when they are running, and anytime we walk by he'll look in the laundry room and wave, even if there's no laundry going. His fascination is helpful when I need to laundry, as he'll gladly sit there and watch me move a load, or watch the machines going as I fold the clean laundry.

I guess that's all the news from us this week. Here's a few pictures.

Max in the cart outside Costco:

A couple with Daddy at the park:

Valentine's Pics!

Ten Months Old!

I can't believe that I took ten month pictures of Max already! Jeff pointed out that as of Monday, we can say his birthday is "next month." Ack! I'm not sure I'm ready for a first birthday already, it seems like he was just inside me not very long ago. I was at a baby shower last week and one of the guests had her six week old baby with her. She looked SO small and I was remembering when Max was a little squishy newborn like that, with skinny little chicken legs and those tiny wrists with extra skin wrinkling around them. Now he is our tall boy with a Buddha belly and a giant head who rolls all over and eats table food. We'll be sending him off to college next week if this keeps up.

Max was sick a couple weeks ago, he has had a couple colds but this was his first time having something more than that. Poor kiddo had a fever, threw up once, and clearly didn't feel good. Thankfully it didn't last too long, it is so hard when he is obviously not feeling right and we can't fix it. Not to mention I'm sure he was wondering why Mom and Dad wouldn't get with the program and make him feel better already.

I went to an all-day "Understanding Your Nikon DSLR Camera" class at the University of Washington last Sunday with my friend Laura. I learned a LOT about my fabulous new camera that I can't wait to try out. I used some of what I learned while taking his ten month photos, which was quite the challenge. Long gone are the days of propping Max up on the couch, placing Chester Bear just so next to him, and snapping away. Now it's more like set Max on the couch, get as ready as I can to take a picture, put Chester in place, and attempt to take a picture before Max throws Chester to the floor or starts to eat him. Quite a challenge. I have decided that from now on I'm taking the monthly pictures when Jeff is here to help!

Max attended his first birthday party today, it was lots of fun to help a friend celebrate and reminded me that I need to get cracking on his party! I know my days of getting to choose everything for his birthday parties are numbered, so I will enjoy complete control while I have it.

Here are a couple photos taken at the playground right by our house. On the swing, which he loves:

We always get comments on his eyes, this picture shows why:

Oma got this outfit for Maxwell for Christmas. The shirt says "Little Heart Breaker":

Another Christmas gift we gave him is a soft fish bowl with a few little aquatic creatures. Max took a liking to the starfish and will hold it for long stretches of time. Its little arms are also perfect for chewing on.

Max has learned to raise him arms for "So big!" when we ask, "How big is Maxwell?"

A cute shot from our ten month session, sans Chester Bear:

I finally had the bright idea to try a few shots outside, where he was distracted enough to leave Chester alone long enough for me to get a picture. My background unfortunately doesn't fill the frame, but oh well, I'll take what I can get.

Happy New Year!

Well, I did warn you it might be a while before I did another blog entry, but I still apologize for the delay. In contrition, I offer you lots and lots of pictures. We have had a busy and wonderful past few weeks. The Moore clan was here for Christmas, and we had a great time with them. As usual, much delicious food was consumed and there was plenty of oohing and aahing over Max's cuteness. I even got to finally try the famed chocolate-peanut butter-Ritz cracker concoctions (there's a family legend with those).

Next, we headed off to Florida to ring in the new year with Dad and Helen. Despite waking up at 3am and only taking two half-hour naps all day, Max was a trooper on both (very full) flights there. He did well on the way home too, there was a little more crying on that trip but also more sleeping. We were blessed with very nice people in the aisle seat on all our flights, and heard several comments about how adorable and well-behaved Maxwell is. We really enjoyed our time in Florida, it wasn't warm enough to swim but we did have a day that had good beach weather. While we were enjoying the beach, a group (pod?) of dolphins came and was swimming really close to shore, maybe 10 feet out. They went back and forth, playing and swimming all in a row, for maybe 10 or 15 minutes, swam away, then came back again a bit later. While we weren't actually awake to ring in 2010, it was still very special to see it in in Florida with family. We also got to spend an afternoon with my friends Kevin and Amanda. We met at Calvin and I hadn't seen them in 5 years, way too long.

Max's first tooth made an appearance on his 9 month birthday! He is really enjoying solid foods now and is none too impressed with the baby food purees these days. He loves to wave and started clapping while we were in Florida. So cute! We had his 9 month well child check today and he weighs 20 pounds and 12 ounces, which is about the 55th percentile. He is still at the top of the charts for height and head circumference.

Many of you know that my wonderful family surprised me with my heart's desire for Christmas, a Nikon DSLR camera! I was so surprised and excited and am loving taking photos with it. So, on to the mother lode of photos, enjoy!

Max in front of the tree:

With Oma and Opa:

Me, Denny and Elizabeth in our Christmas Eve popper crowns:

Family Christmas picture:

Max and I both received some University of Michigan gear for Christmas. Go Blue!

Max's 9 month photo:

A couple with Daddy:

So cute!

Before you can go to the beach, you have to get your sunscreen on:

On the beach in Florida:

What is this stuff?

Beach baby:

Dining al fresco, Daddy showing how it's done:

Out for a walk:

Dinner with Grandpa:

At the Tampa airport, waiting to fly home:

It's Christmas Time!

Just one blogger again today, dear readers. Alas, Shani had to return home to that little piece of paradise we call Michigan, though we did our best to convince her to move out here. We are having fun with Maxwell's first Christmas season. He helped us pick out a tree (we didn't chop our own this year, that will be more fun when Max knows what's going on) and he loves to look at the tree when the lights are on. We also made an inaugural visit to Santa. Max did very well. The Santa was great, Jeff stood by him for a few minutes holding Max so he could warm up before the big hand off. Once Max was in Santa's arms, all he wanted to do was stare at Santa and taste his suit. We raised quite a ruckus and eventually we did get him to look at the camera and were rewarded with a very cute picture.

It's much easier to take Max out to eat these days, now that he'll sit in a restaurant high chair and look around at all the people. He loves to share whatever food we happen to be eating. He hasn't mastered feeding himself yet, he will grab the pieces of food we put on his high chair tray, but getting those pieces into his mouth remains an elusive challenge.

We're hearing lots of "talking" these days. It's usually "Da da da da da" though that isn't specific to Jeff yet. I keep putting in a plug for "Ma ma ma ma" but so far we haven't heard that one. Max does seem to be learning how to wave. He doesn't always do it, but several times now he waves in response to one of us waving. SO cute!

We're looking forward to the Moore family's arrival on Saturday. It will be very special to celebrate Maxwell's first Christmas together. I'll try to do another post before the 25th, but if I don't make it, wishing you all a very Merry Christmas!

Here's Max helping us pick out the perfect tree:

Playing in a box. It really is true what they say about kids preferring the packaging to the toy:

Random cute picture:

We've had quite the cold weather here the past few weeks. Thankfully the unseasonable cold brought it with crystal clear skies (hello, mountains!) and sunshine, so we've been able to bundle up and get out for some walks. Here's Max all cozy in the stroller:

You may remember my friend Leanne, she of Tiny Toppers

Well, she is making knitted Santa hats for the Christmas season, so of course I had to get one for Max:

And finally, the official 2009 Santa photo:

Two for One!

Well, well, well lucky readers, are you in for a treat! To make up for my being remiss in blog posting, I have not one but TWO entries for you to read today! First of all (drum roll please) I'd like to introduce our first ever guest blogger, the wonderful Shani! Shani came to visit for a week and we had such a wonderful time. I'll let her tell you all about her experience:

from an outsider…a guest blog…

Greetings
all! Keri has been kind enough to allow me to guest blog here, so
I’ll try to make this at least mildly entertaining (FYI, I’m her
cousin Shani from Michigan). Sitting in the SeaTac airport, I feel
rested and happy to have spent a week with some of my favorite people
(yes, that means you Keri, Jeff, and Max!). They treat you well in La
Casa de Moore- I’m still full from the homemade cinnamon rolls and
pizza we gorged on yesterday (courtesy of famed Greg “the doughboy”
Moore, who made a whopping six pizzas despite his pesky case if
Nintendonitis)**. I would have taken some pictures of the spread, but
what’s the point if you can’t actually eat it? It simply wouldn’t
be fair to you as the reader.

You
know every parent is going to think their kid is the cutest ever, but
I must attest that I agree with Mom and Dad WagenMoore on this
one…Max is undoubtedly delicious. Max agreed to let me care for
him on Monday and Tuesday while Jeff and Keri worked. Understandably,
there were a few brief exchanges of concern between Max and Jeff as
they modeled the diaper and sleeper routine the first night and I
pestered with a few dopey first-time caregiver questions (hey, when
one is in the presence of such parenting greatness, one becomes aware
of doing the best she can!). Of course, I needn’t have worried as
Max and I became fast friends. Now I won’t bore you here with each
and every moment that Auntie Shani and Max spent together, but there
are a few things I think you should know about Jeff and Keri that
they might not tell you themselves.

First
off, they have rules. But as we all know, rules are made to be
broken, most specifically by aunties and grandmas (basically, it’s
Grandma Barb’s fault as the rule-breaking instigator). Upon leaving
for work on Monday, Keri left me a detailed note on Max’s naptime
routine (i.e. “go up the stairs, turn right, left in to Max’s
bedroom, reach for the light and turn it on, smile and coo at Max
three times"…etc). This is a slight exaggeration, but you catch my
drift. Part of the directions indicated to read Max one story and
sing him one song before settling him in his crib. At Grandma Barb’s
encouragement, I broke that rule every time I put Max to sleep.
There’s nothing like a cuddly kiddo in your arms as you read
together, and nothing like the way he cozied and calmed in my arms
when we were singing. I don’t have one of my own, so it was my
attempt to soak up as much of this time with him that I could (word
to the wise though-- “Silent Night” is not his favorite).

Second,
they just can’t get enough- you’ll see what I mean. Just before
getting into bed on the second night of my stay, there was a light
tap on my door. Jeff announced in an excited whisper that they were
going to go “watch Max sleep”. I could tell that this wasn’t
the first time they had done this, and I believe they admitted that
this was an every night routine. The procedure involved using a flashlight covered with a t-shirt, so as not to be too bright to
wake Max as they peer at him in his sleep. Naturally, I was thrilled
as we crept into the room and gazed silently while he dozed (words
that came to mind… angelic, adorable, peaceful ).
Nothing short of precious (watching the boy sleep, and watching the
parents watch the boy sleep). Clearly, this kiddo is not short on
love.

Okay,
there is more I could tell you, but my time is up. Thanks Jeff, Keri,
and Max (and Grandma Barb) for a great week- I’m so glad we’re
family!

**Please
note, nickname coined due to his superior and time-tested skill in
making bread, pizza, and melt-in-your-mouth cinnamon rolls.

Thank you Shani for the guest entry!

We had a great time with Shani and only wish she could have stayed
longer! Max had a wonderful first Thanksgiving at his great-grandma's
house. He's still a bit young for turkey and cranberries, but he loved
the potatoes, both regular and sweet. As usual, there was a houseful of
relatives and we even had sunshine! Greg, Leah and Emma journeyed over
from the other side of the mountains to join us. As always, we loved
having them here and Max had no shortage of attention!

We are still waiting for the appearance of a tooth, but would not be
surprised to see one any day, as Max is showing lots of signs of
teething lately. I'm not sure if it's teething-related or something
else, but he's been waking up during the night again these past few
days. I'm hoping that's something that fades away quickly, as I have
really enjoyed being well-rested! We can tell that Maxwell is becoming
more aware of his environment and of his individuality. He's started to
play a back-and-forth game with us wherein Max will shake his head back
and forth, then Mama or Daddy has a turn, then Max...so cute! And he'll
get mad now if you have to take a toy away, definitely more of a "Hey,
I want that back!" then the previous "Huh, where did that toy go?"
attitude.

Can you believe he's 8 months old already? Let's do some pictures!

Fun with Aunt Shani:

Thanksgiving dinner:

Max's cousin Kendra is just one month younger than him. We took some pictures of the two of them together. This one is blurry but it's so funny I have to share. I think Max is trying to eat her hair:

Family Thanksgiving pictures:

Max was way too interested in grabbing Emma's hair to look at the camera for this one:

Max and Uncle Greg:

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Happy Halloween!

A belated Happy Halloween to all of you! Max's first Halloween was lots of fun. We didn't go trick-or-treating, but we did dress him up in his oh-so-cute dragon costume a few times, including one trip to Jeff's office to show him off there. Max helped us hand out a little candy and then went to bed and slept through all the trick-or-treaters. We continue to have so much fun with him, he is starting to really babble now and it is so precious. His favorite place to "talk" is on the changing table, followed closely by laying on the bathroom floor post-bath. He's sitting up really well now and can reach for things without falling over (most of the time!). I think he is starting to work on the mechanics of crawling, but hasn't put it all together yet. He's gotten very good at pushing up with his arms and will also stick his little butt up in the air, but hasn't done both of those things together yet.

Max loves our kitties and is always interested when they walk by. Not surprisingly, he will reach out and try to grab some fur if they get within reach. We have been shocked to discover that of the two kitties, Dory is much more willing to be near the baby. Those of you who know Dory know that she is definitely more skittish than Pixel, to say the least. Go figure then that Pixel stays out of Max's reach and Dory will let him "pet" and even grab her.

I hesitate to write this, knowing that I'll jinx myself and it may go haywire again, but Max has been sleeping very well lately. He usually will take two naps of at least an hour each, which is a vast improvement over a month or so ago, and almost always sleeps about 12 hours at night. I figure this is my reward for those early months when I was only ever sleeping 90 minutes at a stretch! I am not so cocky as to assume this is a done deal, but I will enjoy the sleep while it's here! I wasn't sure how the whole daylight savings time switch would go, and am convinced that it was invented by a childless person. Thankfully we did okay and were able to shift Max's schedule without too much trouble.

My cousin Jesse was in town from Maryland for a conference and was able to come over for dinner last night. Unfortunately Max was already asleep when he arrived, but we of course showed off pictures and video. It was great to see Jesse again and we look forward to having his sister Shani here in just a couple weeks! So I guess that means Mal, Anne and Don, you are next!

I'll do pictures below, but first I'm going to attempt to post a video:

Maxwell talking following a bath. Jeff was getting an audio recording on his phone while I took this video:
http://justaminutemoore.com/2009/11/07/happy-halloween.aspx

Isn't that just the cutest thing you've ever seen? Okay, now on to pictures!

The official monthly shots are a bit more challenging now. Max tried to pull the sticker off his onesie and preferred to eat Chester Bear rather than pose with him, but we still got some good shots.

"Stand back, Chester, I'll protect you!"

"Mmmm....Chester Bear...."

"What?"

Our neighborhood has several parks and play areas. This one is very close to our house and has a baby swing. Maxwell took his first ride in it recently and really liked it. Note also his cute jacket from Grandma Helen.

If clothing gets near his mouth, the tongue will reach out to taste it:

Enjoying the ride

Max the Dragon!

Pumpkin Time!

Max is seven months old today! I haven't taken the official seven month pictures yet, but I promise to post those next time. October has been a great month for us. Max continues to enjoy solid food and has eaten everything we've offered so far. Last night he tried butternut squash soup and that was a big hit. He is doing really well with sitting up and can sit for much longer stretches now without wobbling. While we have seen him roll from tummy to back a couple times, he seems to not remember that he can do that, and protests when he feels that he's been stuck on his tummy too long. Yesterday he did about 15 minutes of tummy time and then had enough, so Jeff rolled him onto his back....whereupon Max promptly rolled back onto his tummy.

We have been taking full advantage of our local pumpkin patches and farms this fall. So far Maxwell has visited three different pumpkin patches this month! We went to the farm that's really close to our house to take a few pictures one Sunday afternoon. Then a couple weeks ago, Greg and Leah and the girls came for the weekend so we could make our annual family trip through the corn maze at "The Farm" in Snohomish. Locals, if you've never been there, it is well worth checking out! In addition to the pumpkin patch and corn maze, they have all kinds of activities for kids, from a cow train to a hay bale maze to a giant bin of corn kernels to play in. Jeff's mom was able to come out as well and it was really special to have her here for the fun. Finally, Max and I went to a pumpkin patch a bit south of here to meet up with some other moms and kiddos. All of these visits provided for plenty of photo opportunities and I made good use of the cute sweater that I purchased just for this purpose.

Max had his official six month checkup earlier this month. He is now 18 pounds, 13 ounces and 28 1/3 inches long. His height and head circumference are still in the very upper percentiles, and his weight is about the 65th percentile. The pediatrician said he looked great, we don't have another checkup now until 9 months...after going every other month for so long (and more in that first couple of months!) it is a little strange to wait so long, but I know it will be here before we know it.

I'm expecting Max to wake up any minute, so I better get the pictures in here and get this posted while I have a minute!

This picture was a challenge to get, as Max was more interested in picking up grass and leaves and eating them than in smiling for the camera.

Cuddling with Oma:

The corn maze at The Farm is shaped like the state of Washington, with paths corresponding to the state highways and roads, and authentic landmarks. Here's our group in front of the Grand Coulee Dam:

Mom, are you taking my picture in this sweater again?

Finally, one by my friend Justine...she's the one who took pictures of us a month or so ago (visit her at www.jsheltonphotography.blogspot.com):

Six Months Old and Sitting Up

Max continues to impress us with his skills. He can now sit up by himself! Just a week ago he was just starting to do it, we could take our hands away for a few seconds at a time. By today he can sit for several minutes by himself, though we still stay nearby in case he tips. He hasn't yet figured out how to roll from his tummy to his back, which proves problematic when he rolls from back to tummy in the crib and then gets stuck. Hopefully he'll master bidirectional rolling pretty soon. He continues to love solid foods and has added carrots and broccoli to his repertoire. This last week has slept great at night....we're talking 12 hours at a stretch several nights this week! Unfortunately his naps are not going so smoothly, he is only sleeping for 30 or 40 minutes often and will then still be tired but not interested in napping. However, I would much rather deal with challenging naps and have good night sleep than the other way around. Hopefully the naps will normalize a bit here soon. Max will be starting day care a week from Tuesday. We found a home day care close by. We really like the woman and are glad to have found a place for Max, but that doesn't mean it won't be very hard to leave him there...of course I will be worried about how he will do, will he take a nap, etc....we are very lucky that my job is three days a week and my mom is able to do one day, so he'll be in day care on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

My friend Justine is a talented photographer and she came over to take six month pictures of Max and family pictures of us last week. She's working on editing the images for us, but she posted a few to her website. Check it out here, just scroll down a bit to the "Mr. M and Family" post. And if you are local and need a photographer, give her a call!

Max is now six months old, which is hard to believe...halfway to a year already! We have his official six month checkup on Thursday and are curious to see how much he weighs and how long he is now. Considering that he is wearing some 12 month clothes, I have a feeling he'll still be in the upper percentiles!

Pictures, pictures, I've got pictures!

Six month pics:

Max's Oma got him this cute train towel:

Showing off his sitting skills:

Starting to topple forward, but still happy:

Cute boys!

Yum, yum broccoli!

We Have a Roller!

It's been an exciting couple of weeks here in the Moore household. We enjoyed a visit from Greg, Leah and the girls over the Labor Day weekend. On Labor Day we met up with Fred so he and Max could meet. Those of you who were at our wedding will remember Fred, who played a very important role...yep, he's the one who married us! Last Wednesday I had my oral surgery. While I can't say it was a pleasant experience, it did go well. He was able to extract what was left of my tooth and go ahead and put the implant in, which was great. Now I wait for four months and then can get a crown. So far the most aggravating thing is I'm not supposed to chew on that side of my mouth until the crown is in. I go back on Friday for a follow-up visit and they're going to switch out the abutment (?). Hopefully everything will be looking good and that won't involve another one of those killer numbing shots to the roof of the mouth.

Last weekend was a busy one, on Friday Max and I journeyed to Bellevue for Jeff's company picnic. It was held at a park in downtown Bellevue, and the weather was beautiful. This will be really fun for Max in another year or two, as they had one of those bouncy castles and all the ice cream bars you could eat! This year he settled for hanging out in our laps and taking in the scenery. We got lots of compliments on his cuteness and exclamations over how tall he is for his age. Then on Saturday we went up north for my cousin Sarah's wedding. This was another outdoor event and once again the weather was most cooperative. This was Maxwell's first wedding and he did very well.

The biggest excitement of the past few days is that Max is now rolling over! He did this for the first time last weekend. So far he only goes from back to tummy, and prefers to roll to his left. Having mastered this skill, he has shown no interest in repeating it the past couple days. My mom was here taking care of him on Monday and he didn't once roll over for her. Thankfully we caught it on video so we can prove that we aren't just overexcited first time parents.

Almost as exciting is Max's first taste of solid (okay, semi-solid) food! We started on Sunday with baby oatmeal and have also tried avocado and sweet potato. So far avocado has been the biggest hit, but he's eaten all three things. It's fun to see his reaction to the new foods.

Whew! I think that's all the news to share for now. On to the pictures!

Max and Daddy:

Reading stories with Elizabeth and Emma. No, that isn't a midriff-baring jacket he has on, it's just pushed up a bit.

With Fred:

At the picnic, more interested in trying to chew on his overalls than in smiling for the picture:

Family photo at the wedding:

Zonked out after the ceremony:

Revived post-nap and ready for the drive home:

First time eating oatmeal:

I'm not so sure about this, Mom and Dad...

Hmmm, still undecided but I'll try some more...

Okay, maybe this isn't so bad after all.

Five Months Old!

I have been remiss in my blogging lately, I apologize to my readers. If you're dedicated enough to still be checking the blog, thank you, and I promise to try to do better! Max is 5 and a half months old already. How did that happen? He is so much fun. Thankfully he seems to have kept his easy going personality, hopefully that will stick with him for the long haul. He still hasn't mastered rolling over, but he's come really close to rolling from back to tummy a few times. That darn arm gets in the way and keeps him from going all the way over. He can sit up if he has a bit of support, and will stand briefly also (of course, not without us holding him up!). The other day we inadvertently discovered his new favorite game. Here's how it's played: I hold Max and walk up or down the stairs. Jeff walks behind us and Max looks over my shoulder at him. And it's just that easy! We did it last night and Max was laughing. We're not sure exactly what the appeal is, but we're happy to indulge him, that laugh is the sweetest sound.

We've enjoyed some company lately. A few weeks ago we had Jeff's brother Greg, our niece Elizabeth, Leah (Greg's awesome girlfriend) and Leah's daughter Emma come for the weekend. The girls really enjoy talking to Max now that he is a bit more interactive than when he was in that newborn "potted plant" stage. They are coming back tomorrow for the Labor Day weekend and we are looking forward to more time with them. Last weekend our friends Matt and Mandy came from Minnesota for a long weekend. It was great to have some time with them and to show them around Seattle a bit. Visitors are always welcome if any of you want to head our way!

Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers next Wednesday, September 9. I'll be having oral surgery that day. I can't remember if I've posted about it here, but I had a crown fall out, leaving a hole where one of my top teeth should be. To make a long story short, they can't just put another crown in. So the oral surgeon has to take what's left of the old tooth out and put an implant in. Sometimes this is a two-step process with a four month wait in between, but he is hopeful that he'll be able to do both of these things on Wednesday. Then I wait about four months for the bone to grow around the implant, and then my dentist can put in a new crown. Whew! In the meantime my dentist made me a "flipper," which is a fake tooth on a retainer-type thing that I can snap in and out for cosmetic purposes, but I'm not supposed to eat with it and it makes me talk with a bit of a lisp, so I don't wear it all the time. At any rate, dental work of any kind is no picnic, and I'm really not looking forward to this. I'll be very glad when it's over!

Pictures, pictures, I've got pictures! Let's start off with a couple of Maxwell's five month shots:

Here's Max with his Uncle Greg:

With Mama:

Taking a rest from the hard work of tummy time:

Max"s Grandma Helen got him this cute outfit when they were visiting, and now it fits!

Heat Wave

You probably heard about (or lived through) Seattle's record-setting heat wave at the end of July. It happened to fall on the week Dad and Helen were here...welcome to the beautiful Pacific Northwest, where it's hotter than it is in Southern Ohio. What's wrong with this picture? They were real troupers even on the day it was 104 with a heat index of 107. Thank goodness for our friends Doug and Donna, who are letting us borrow their portable AC unit since they have central air in California. We put that in Max's room so at least it would be tolerable in their for his naps and nighttime sleeping. I am very glad to report that our weather has normalized and we are enjoying upper 70s this week, which feels fabulous. We even had rain yesterday and today after 20 something days without any. We had a great visit with Dad and Helen and Max enjoyed being taken care of by his grandparents while Mom and Dad were at work.

Maxwell is doing well, continuing to delight us every day. He keeps things interesting for us...this weekend he took a marathon 2 hour, 45 minute nap for Jeff while I was out and about, and then today he decided he was too cool to take an afternoon nap for Grandma while I was at work. I think he just doesn't want us to get too comfortable! Skip this next section if you don't want to read about baby bodily functions. Okay, if you're still with me, I must share the other Max drama...a poop strike! A couple weeks ago he went 6 days between "productions" which we thought was a long stretch, until this past week he managed to go 9 days (yep, that's the number NINE) without pooping. We went to the pediatrician at day 8 and he was happy as could be. She said as long as he was eating (check), not in distress (check) and his tummy wasn't hard (nope, nice and soft) we could wait him out and he was just using every single drop of milk!

Max's latest trick is getting his toes in his mouth. So far only the left foot has actually made it into his mouth. Usually he'll suck on those toes while his right leg just waves around in the air. He'll do this almost any time he has access to his toes, diaper changing and bath time are favorite opportunities.

Picture time!

Most of you know that I went to Calvin College in Michigan. Here's Maxwell in his first Calvin gear:

Here he is posing with his adoring grandparents:

Another new thing we tried this week is the ExerSaucer. We prop him up a bit with blankets and so far he loves it, he stares at all the toys and grabs the ones he can reach and of course, puts them in his mouth. Thanks Marielle!

Post-bath, working on capturing a foot:

And, success!

We got a Bumbo chair from my friend Holli (thanks, Holli!). We tried it out while Dad and Helen were here. At first Max was a bit uncertain, as evidenced by this picture, but he is warming up to it now.

Now that the weather has normalized, we are enjoying lots of walks in the stroller. Here's Max ready to go, equipped with shades and Sophie the Giraffe:

And finally, a cute one of him showing off his Mickey outfit from Aunt Donna:

Four months old, a visit from Donna, and Tiny Toppers!

I'm still here! Sorry for the delayed update. Now that I am back to work the days really fly by and I know I am overdue to post here. We're doing well, Max is now four months old! It's hard to believe that four months have gone by already. We have his four month well baby visit on Monday, so I'm curious to see how long he is. He weighed 16 pounds last week, so he's more than doubled his birth weight. It will be interesting to see where he falls in the percentages now. When we are out and about we get lots of comments on how long he is. He is holding his head up a lot more and has started rolling to the side from his back. I don't think he's figured out the logistics of moving an arm out of the way so he can roll all the way to his tummy. He is giving us some real laughs now, it is so much fun to hear that giggle. The other night he and Jeff were sitting in the glider and Jeff made Max laugh, which made Jeff laugh, which made Max laugh...it was so cute.

We have been blessed with some wonderful company lately. Right now Dad and Helen are here, they arrived Thursday night and will be here until next weekend. A couple weeks ago we had our dear friend Donna and her son Eric here for the week. Donna took care of Max while I was at work. Max had a great time with Aunt Donna and the week flew by. Not only did she watch Max, Donna also cooked and cleaned for us. It was so great to see them again, we really miss them now that they live out of state.

In other fun happenings, Max is a model! My friend Leanne is a very talented knitter and sells hats for babies and kids online. She needed a model for some of her baby hats and Maxwell was happy to oblige. Check out her website and see if you can spot him (you can tell if you got it right by the little scratches on his forehead and nose). Shhhh, don't tell, but we also had him model a couple girl hats. Clearly he inherited Jeff's acting abilities as I think he pulled it off quite well. If you need baby gifts, Tiny Toppers is a great place to shop! Here's the link: Tiny Toppers

Yes, yes, I have pictures! Here you go:

These jammies are so cute, I love the monkey feet. And of course the Maxwell makes them all the cuter:

My mom, a confirmed book addict, got this t-shirt for Max. So of course I had to stage an appropriate picture:

Max is getting much better at grabbing things and everything goes to the mouth now. The other day he was bringing this rattle to his mouth and it fell onto his nose. We were cracking up at his expression as he tried to see what this thing on his face was, while moving his head around.

I mentioned above the scratches he had, this is a casualty of the little baby fingernails getting just a touch too long. Trimming them is such a tricky job, I confess that I make Jeff do it. We usually do it while Max is eating and somewhat distracted. Here are the scratches in evidence:

Here's Maxwell with his adoring Aunt Donna:

And finally, four month pictures!

Max's First Fourth

Maxwell enjoyed his first Fourth of July this weekend. We hung out at home and tried to stay cool during the day, and then went to see our friends Laura and Dave for dinner. Dave grilled some delicious salmon and asparagus for dinner, and we finished off the evening with a yummy blueberry lemon cake for an early celebration of my birthday. Max was such a good boy, just hung out while we ate, and Laura and Dave were properly impressed with his cuteness. At one point Laura said, "I know I keep saying how cute he is, but it's just so true, there's no better way to say it!". We couldn't agree more. We were a little apprehensive about how well Max would sleep with all the fireworks going off, as you can set them off in our neighborhood and it gets quite loud inside our house. So we closed his bedroom window and door and turn the fan as high as it would go. That definitely helped, you could still hear the fireworks in there but it was significantly muffled. Thankfully it didn't seem to bother Maxwell at all, he slept through the show.

I returned to work this week. I was able to ease back into it by starting Wednesday, so I only had to work two days and then had Friday off. Jeff was able to take Wednesday and Thursday off to be with Max, which helped tremendously. It was still really hard. I missed Max a lot and was so happy to come home to my two wonderful boys. Many of you know that my job is uncertain, I still don't know anything other than...my job is uncertain. I'm really hoping to keep this job, not only is it something I enjoy in my field, but it's part time and close to home. It was hard enough returning to work knowing it was part time, but full time plus a commute to downtown is more than I can bear to think of. Of course the alternative of being unemployed is not good either. So let's continue to hope I can stay where I am!

We are loving every minute with Maxwell. He has been giving really big smiles to Daddy the past couple of days. It is so much fun to see Max light up when Jeff looks at him. Sometimes his whole body wiggles with joy. Max's that is, not Jeff's, though it wouldn't surprise me...we get such a high when we get a big Max grin or laugh. So, let's see this cuteness, you say? Very well...

Sometimes at the end of a feeding the Tired overcomes the Maxwell:

Headed out for a walk with the shades and hat (disclaimer: I know my hat looks really dirty. I have washed and bleached it, and it's just so well loved that I think it will never be white again):

Max is lucky enough to have two pairs of "Grandpa overalls" in two sizes. My Grandpa, my mom's dad, was a farmer and wore these type of overalls every day to work on the farm. We all have fond memories of Grandpa in his striped overalls, working in the barn or taking a well-earned afternoon nap on the couch. We received Max's striped overalls from my mom and from my cousin Jason and his wife Amy. I have been eagerly checking to see if the smaller ones fit, and now they do:

Here are some pictures from the 4th. This one shows Max sucking the "right" fingers....aka the same two that Jeff sucked when he was little:

Max and Mom with birthday cake:

And finally, one of the three of us. While I actually appear taller than Jeff in this photo, rest assured that it's just an illusion. Hope you had a great holiday!

Seasoned Traveler

Max and I had a great time on our trip to see the family. Maxwell was a champion traveler. We lucked out on the ride there and had an empty seat in our row so we were able to take his seat on and with mom and me, we had a full row to ourselves. The ride home was just me and Max, and the plane was completely full. Thankfully the people next to us were very nice, and Max did great on both flights...minimal fussing for short periods, and he slept for a couple hours each time. When we were in the Seattle airport a couple people came up to me after the flight and commented on what a good baby he was on the plane. All in all, a successful first two plane rides! I can see it getting much more challenging as he gets older and more mobile and is not so happy to be confined for several hours. We enjoyed our time with family, Max charmed all the Wagenaar relatives and his Oma and Opa were thrilled to see him again. We also got to see a family whom I used to babysit for when I lived in Grand Rapids. Grant and Grace are so grown up now, I wish they lived closer to us so that they could babysit for Max. Dave, Lisa, Grant and Grace, it was great to see you and I miss you lots!

In other news, I go back to work on Wednesday. I will miss Maxwell so much! It helps a lot that Jeff will be home with him on Wednesday and Thursday, and then Friday is a holiday. Many of you know that we are in the process of layoffs at work and I am at risk of being bumped out of my position, so far we are still in wait and see mode. I am really hoping to stay in this job, it is part-time and a great fit for me. If anyone out there knows of someone who will just pay me (plus benefits, please) to stay home with Max, by all means let me know!

Max got an unplanned bath this morning after he peed everywhere not once, but twice during a diaper change. He seemed pretty proud of himself afterwards so we suspect maybe he was saving it up for just such an occasion. He still loves sucking on his fingers, he is much better at getting them in his mouth but hasn't figured out that he can bring the fingers to the mouth, he usually tries to bring the mouth to the fingers...it's very cute.

On to pictures!

On an airplane for the very first time!

Giving love to Oma and Opa and Grandpa:

The Grand Rapids family threw a "Welcome Maxwell" party for us, complete with cake. The picture below is with my cousin David, we were laughing that to those who don't know us it will look like a family shot. Dave said maybe we could PhotoShop Jeff's head in for his...he is about the right height!

Max doing tummy time in Anne and Don's backyard:

With Mallory, Shani and Grandma:

Kisses!

Three Months!

We are back safe and sound from our trip and had a great time. I'll post more about that (and pictures) soon, but wanted to get a few three month shots up. I took these right before we left last week. How cute is he???!!

First Plane Ride, Coming Right Up!

Max and I will be embarking on his first plane ride on Wednesday. We're off to Michigan to visit Maxwell's Oma and Opa, and to see his Wagenaar relatives. I am excited to be in Michigan and a little apprehensive about the almost 5 hour plane ride. Thankfully on the way there my mom will be on the same flight as us, but we'll be coming back just the two of us, as she's staying longer. For many reasons, I wish Jeff was able to come with us! Hopefully Max will sleep for much of the trip. We celebrated Father's Day today since we'll be in Michigan next Sunday. Jeff got a frame with Maxwell's footprints on it, and we wrote "Max Loves Daddy" on it also which is oh so true. I think it was a hit. We spent the day relaxing at home together, which is one of our favorite things to do on the weekend. I also was able to get some naps in while Max had Daddy time. Max is still doing short naps during the day, but he did a nice long stretch of sleep last night, from about 7:15pm to 2:30am. I'm hoping those nighttime stretches get longer, especially since I'll be going back to work the week after we get back from our trip (let's not even talk about how hard THAT will be!).

Max is making progress on getting his fingers reliably in his mouth and has started to actually suck on them some of the time. He'll do either hand but seems to prefer his left. Which fingers go in the mouth is totally random. He would dearly love to put his other hand in his hair while sucking on fingers...it will go up on his head and kind of wave around and try to grab on. However, this effort is hampered by the fact that he still doesn't have very much hair.

The other day my mom came over to visit and I was feeding Max. She came up behind the chair we were in and looked over my shoulder and said hello to Max. He looked up and gave Grandma a great big smile, as milk came out of his mouth and down his chin. So cute!

Here's your weekly picture fix:

Maxwell has so many cute outfits, I just love getting him dressed each morning. Many days he gives me the opportunity to put him in more than one outfit when the first one (or more!) gets baby fluids of some kind on it. Here's his cute striped train outfit from Grandma:

Many of you know that I attended the University of Michigan for grad school. When we were in Michigan last summer, Max was just a few weeks in utero. We got him this onesie then. Go Blue!

Max's Oma is a flight attendant, his Uncle Greg has worked as a pilot, and his Grandpa has his private pilot's license. So a love of flying could well be in his blood! Here he is in his snazzy airplane shirt:

And finally, one of the three of us taken today, for Father's Day:

Heat!

So it was a HOT week here last week....we're talking in the 90s every day. It was a little much for early June. I'm happy to report that the past few days have been much more pleasant. Still sunny and warm, but not so blazing hot. Max seemed to do okay in the heat. I wondered if he'd be too hot swaddled but we tried going without it a few times and that did not go so well, so we ended up swaddling him in just a diaper and pointing the fan right at him. We had a fun weekend spending time with family and friends. Maxwell is just as cute as ever and giving us lots of smiles and little laughs. On Sunday night he slept from 9:30pm to 4:45am! Of course I did not sleep that whole time, kept waking up and checking on him, but it was still glorious. Unfortunately it wasn't repeated last night, we had a middle of the night wakeup, but maybe he'll decide to try it again soon. We can hope! He's still been doing a lot of the short napping, with a longer one interspersed every so often...to give us hope, I guess.

Next week Max and I will be flying to Michigan to visit family. This will be Maxwell's first time meeting the extended Wagenaar family and he can't wait! I hear they are pretty excited as well. We will also get to see his Oma and Opa Moore. The only sad part is that Jeff won't be coming with us, and we'll be gone over Father's Day. Many apologies to my wonderful husband for taking The Boy away for that day...we'll be celebrating it this Sunday. If you have any winning plane travel tips, by all means send them my way. I'm hoping for a cooperative baby and understanding seatmates...or even better, empty seats! My mom will be with us on the flight there, which will be a huge help, but we'll be coming back before she does.

Pictures!

This was taken at my Grandma's house when we went up about a week ago.

I have a Moby Wrap (infant sling wrap) that I'm planning to use for the airport, so I've been practicing with it the past few days. Max seems not to mind hanging out in there:

On Saturday Max was wearing a cute red polo onesie and jeans. Jeff was inspired to also wear a red polo with his jeans, and they looked very sharp together. Check them out:

Here they are doing some tummy time:

Jeff has been playing around with the photo editing program GIMP. You can do some really cool things, I will leave you with one that we love. And yes, Max's eyes are really that blue...that part of the photo is untouched!

Happy Birthday, Jeff!

It was Jeff's birthday on Monday. It worked out well that it fell on Memorial Day this year, so most of you probably enjoyed a day off for Jeffrey P. Moore Day. We had a great family day together. We started the celebrating a day early while Greg, Leah and the girls were here. Leah baked a yummy chocolate cake (note the candle groupings...three and five, we got a little creative).

Then on Monday we went to lunch at Blue C Sushi in Lynnwood, one of those places with the belt going around and you can just grab the plates you want. It was yummy, even for a non-seaweed/raw fish lover like me, there were lots of options and you can see we had a big stack of plates when we were through:

Later I took a few pictures of my favorite boys together. I am so blessed to have such a wonderful husband and son!

On Thursday Max had his two month checkup. At 10 weeks old he weighs 12 pounds, 1 ounce and is 25.5 inches long. This puts him in the 50th percentile for weight and the 98th percentile for length! Looks like he takes after mom and dad in the height department. He has rolled over during tummy time a few times now, and he obligingly demonstrated this for the pediatrician. I think it is accidental, he will be pushing up with his arms and looking around and then just kind of tips over to one side and rolls onto his back. But it's still very impressive! It's so fun to see him learning new things. Tuesday night my friend Jessica arrived and stayed with us for a few days. It was so wonderful to have her here and the time together just flew by. Here she is with Maxwell:

Jessica is a very talented photographer. While she was here she took some great pictures. Here are a couple:

We have had an unbelievable string of beautiful days here...sunny and warm. I'm hoping to be able to get out for some walks this week. It didn't happen today, Max has been taking short naps all day. My cousin-in-law Callie says that having a baby is like taking a trip somewhere and getting jet lag but never recovering. I think that's a very apt analogy! I know someday I'll catch up on my sleep, and this is definitely better than the days when I never slept more than two hours at a time. Maybe tomorrow Max will take some longer naps for me. We can hope, right?

Here's one final picture, of Max in this cute outfit I got for him at Old Navy the other day:

Two Months Old!

Max was officially two months old on Tuesday....though he was 8 weeks the Thursday before. As my friend Becky said, it's kind of like pregnancy math, where you're pregnant for 9 months but it's 40 weeks. We are loving all the smiles he gives us, and he's starting to do a funny little laugh sometimes. One of those gives me enough energy to make it through a whole night of interrupted sleep. We had a pretty uneventful week last week, we did enjoy a visit from a friend of mine and her 10 month old boy. It was fun to see them and I was reminded that we'll have some childproofing to do before Max becomes mobile! Thursday night Jeff had to work late so it was just Max and me. Around 8pm I got him to sleep. I was tired, hungry, thirsty and ready to find some dinner. I walked out of his room to see that one of our cats (neither confessed but I suspect Dory) had eaten a piece of ribbon we had out from one of our baby gifts, and then thrown the ribbon back up. But she didn't just do it in one spot, she apparently walked down the hallway, throwing up as she went. I really wanted to just leave it there, but I did clean it up...with a small break to get Max back to sleep when he woke up partway through the process. Needless to say, I was very happy to see Jeff when he got home and a big hug from him improved things dramatically!

Here are Max's two month pictures...as Jeff says, the bear has shrunk since last month!

We are enjoying a visit this weekend from Jeff's brother Greg, our niece Elizabeth, Greg's awesome girlfriend Leah, and her daughter Emma. Well, actually, all four of them are awesome, and we love having them here. On Saturday we had, in the words of Emma, "Excellent girl time." The four girls went and got manicures while the boys hung out at home. We discovered that the nail place will do little girls' nails for only $3! Leah said it was worth that just to have someone else trim Emma's nails. Here we are showing off when we got home:

The girls are enjoying their time with Max. What a cute group of kids!

Cuter by the Day!

I know, I know...it doesn't seem possible that Max could get any cuter, and yet, he does. We are so in love with him and it is so much fun to watch him grow and change. For a couple weeks now he has been really grabbing onto our clothing when we hold him...just like a little baby monkey. It's so cute to see him hang on like that. He's still really trying to get a thumb or fingers into his mouth, but usually ends up just mouthing on his closed fist. Sometimes he does manage to capture some fingers, but they soon go flying out of his mouth again when he flails his arms. I'm sure he's thinking, "Hey, who took those fingers away?"

We're no longer giving him the reflux medicine. If anything it seemed to make him feel worse, so we're thinking that his tummy owies are more from gas and digestion than reflux, though he probably does have a touch of that. I'm sure that Maxwell is thrilled we're not using the medicine, here was the face he would make every time:

We got to show Max off to both our workplaces last week. I took him with me to visit my coworkers on Tuesday. They had met him before but hadn't seen him for several weeks and were impressed with how much bigger he is. Then on Friday we drove down to Bellevue to meet Jeff at work. This was Max's first time there and everyone was suitably wowed by his cuteness. He was calm and alert for our visit, just dozing off towards the end. This week we'll mostly be hanging out at home, I have a friend and her little boy coming tomorrow to meet Max, and we are looking forward to a visit from Jeff's brother, his girlfriend, her daughter and our niece over the holiday weekend. Then next Tuesday my friend Jess arrives from Ohio. I can't wait for her to meet Max!

I'll leave you with a few pictures. Enjoy!

All wrapped up in his cute froggy towel (thanks, Aunt Tami!)

Hanging out with Daddy:

Maxwell's Grandpa (my dad) sent him this onesie before he was born. Grandpa is a Porsche fan and clearly wants to instill this same love in his grandson. Here's Max showing off his "I'm so cool" Porsche attitude:

And one with a cute smile:

We had beautiful warm sunny weather all weekend. Max got to wear shorts, and we tried out his sunglasses. They're still a little big, but I think he liked them.

Have a great week!
